Gifts for the Gardener
You can just imagine what a slog it was to research this. I had to explore web sites with goodies for gardeners, go through my books for my rave faves, sit and daydream.... It's a tough job.

So here, in no particular order, are my ideas for great gifts for gardeners, whether they're for yourself or (most generously) for someone else.

Books:
Probably the book I use more than any other is Michael Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs. Each species of tree, shrub, and woody vine is illustrated with a photograph, and in the back, Dirr provides all sorts of useful lists of bloom times, colors of flower, tolerance for shade and salt, pruning needs, and more. The plants are listed by Latin names, but there's a cross index in back if you're more familiar with the common names. Michael Dirr is a Professor of Horticulture at the University of Georgia and one of this country's best respected plantsmen. If you're wanting to expand your gardening expertise beyond perennials and annuals, this is the place to start. Michael Dirr also has books on specific genera, including Hydrangeas and Buddleja, as well as a book on home landscaping.
