Rosemary Alexander is an English designer, and her books are very useful. The Essential Garden Design was the textbook for a design course I took at Northwestern University. It walks you through the steps to developing a comprehensive garden design.

Gordon Hayward is a Vermont-based designer who has useful and beautiful books on paths and garden structures. Your House, Your Garden is a good place to start.

I also like Tracy di Sabato Aust's The Well Designed Mixed Garden, a book that can help you think about design issues in your own garden, including color schemes and complementary plants.

Pam Duthie's Continuous Bloom and Continuous Color have great photographs and information on plant combinations that work. Pam's a garden designer in Northbrook, and her books are well respected.

Going beyond plants and design, Teaming With Microbes: A Gardener's Guide to the Soil Food Web by Jeff Lowenfels and Wayne Lewis will introduce you to everything you need to know about soil.
